Set up in 2001, the Dot NAME generic top-level extension is the sole TLD meant for personal websites only. These domains can include personal or fictitious names, aliases and/or other labels people are popular by. At first, solely third-level registrations were allowed, so if you wished to book john.doe.name, you had to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were loosened and second-level registrations were also allowed. Already taken 3rd-level names remained functional.
